Meet the Master: Painting like Van Gogh

Vincents Tekenlokaal recently launched a new Master program 'Meet the Master'. A program of 5 different master classes involving meeting, making and developing talent and craftsmanship through meaningful Tilburg creators. The first edition of the program is on March 10, 17 and 24. Tilburg artist Saskia Meijer takes participants through the painting style of Vincent van Gogh, the world-famous painter who received his first drawing lessons in Tilburg.

In 3 afternoons at Allemans in the inspiring surroundings of Moerenburg you will work with the technique and the southern color palette as used by Van Gogh. Saskia Meijer masters this technique like no other. The natural environment is the source of inspiration and the starting point for the work to be made. In this master class, Saskia invites you to let go of all need for recognition and in this way explore the space of the image.

Day 1

This day is all about sketching with a homemade reed pen, experiencing nature and creating one's own space within it. In short, it is a day of 'discovering & finding form.'

Day 2 & 3

For the construction of a painting on canvas, we take 2 afternoons. Under Saskia's guidance, you will work with the technique Van Gogh used to build his paintings, such as his brushstroke and the complementary use of color. You will work with water-based oil paint.

Vincent van Gogh as a source of inspiration

Saskia Meijer: "As I walk in nature, so I walk the pristine canvas. Lost in thought, I sketch with brush and paint what I see and experience along the way. In this way I create space on the flat surface, while on the move, in my own nature." Saskia began drawing and painting at age 17. Gradually, she realized that her own experience and exploration has a major role in the creative process. Herein also lies the fascination with Van Gogh: "In this piece, van Gogh is a great master. Although he works by observation, he depicts how he sees things. He is not a still camera, not a robot, he is Van Gogh."

Biography Saskia Meijer

Saskia Meijer (1969, Paramaribo) graduated from Art Academy St. Joost in Breda. She lives and works in Tilburg and has a studio in France. Saskia went through several disciplines: graphic design, graphics and she graduated in the painting department. After the academy, she organized summer painting weeks in France for many years in a row. She also worked with designers for 15 years, illustrating book covers. With 20 years of teaching experience for groups or individuals, Saskia supports you in the creative process. For more information, visit her website.
